MORE REFINEMENTS. MORE POWER.
GMC is committed to elevating the experience for drivers so you can do more. Through professional-grade engineering, GMC was able to achieve several enhancements under the hood, resulting in improved towing capabilities.

The new 2024 Sierra Heavy Duty truck builds upon a supreme foundation, taking the already capable 6.6L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel V8 engine to new heights. The available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel paired with an all-new turbocharger and a 10-speed Allison® transmission now offers 470 HP (at 2,800 rpm).
The Sierra HD also offers 975 lb-ft (at 1,600 rpm) of torque, up to a 25% increase in low-end torque over the previous model year, delivering more power across the entire operating speed range, specifically at low speeds.
The available 10-speed Allison® transmission also enhances trailering capability when paired with the Sierra HD's standard gas engine. It replaces the previous 6-speed automatic engine, which needs to take smaller “steps” between gears, allowing the 6.6L gas engine to reach peak power for longer periods of time.
This translates to a more confident feeling of on-demand power, regardless of whether the truck is towing a trailer — but when you are towing, the trailering capabilities are enhanced. Thanks in part to the 10-speed configuration and the capability of channeling every single pound-foot of torque to the tires in every gear.
The enhancements don’t stop there — additional changes and upgrades were designed to produce more efficient combustion to improve the overall performance. The latest edition of the Duramax engine offers additional improvements including:
- An all-new, more efficient turbocharger with improved efficiency to boost low-end torque
- Increased power and torque over the entire operating speed range
- Improved engine braking with a more powerful turbo vane actuator and uprated valve springs
- New cylinder heads with improved cooling jackets
- An all-new combustion system within the heads that are matched with next-generation, higher-flow injectors and greater fuel injection pressure
- All-new engine controller
- Robustness improvements to the cylinder head and glow plugs
