WHAT IS THE IN-VEHICLE TRAILERING APP

The available In-Vehicle Trailering App is designed to make your trailering experience easier by offering a variety of digital tools and camera views.

Depending on your vehicle’s equipment, the app can help you plan your trip’s route to accommodate your trailer, set up predeparture checklists, keep an eye on trailer tire pressure and more.

The trailering system also features a variety of integrated camera views designed to help you stay aware of the area around your trailer.

WHAT CAN THE IN-VEHICLE TRAILERING SYSTEM DO?

You can access the In-Vehicle Trailering App through the Trailering icon on your center display. What the app can do for you may vary with your vehicle type and equipment. For example, some features are only for pickup trucks and not full-size SUVs.

Here’s what you can do with the In-Vehicle Trailering App:

Create a Trailer Profile

The process of creating a trailer profile can vary depending on your vehicle’s equipment, model year and vehicle type (for example, it’s different for pickup trucks and SUVs). Check your Owner’s Manual for more detailed information.

1. Press the Trailer icon to go to the Trailering menu, press the Trailers tab and select “+ Add Trailer” and then “Create New.” You may have to scroll down to find “+ Add Trailer.”

  • When you connect your trailer and turn your vehicle on or to accessory mode, the system will also automatically prompt you to make a profile or select a profile.
  • You can also import a trailer profile by selecting “Import” from the Trailers tab.

2. You have to have an active OnStar® plan and be signed into your Personal Profile to import a trailer profile.

3. Next, name your trailer profile so you can remember which trailer it’s for. Depending on your vehicle, you may be asked to select the hitch type and trailer type. You’ll see different features in the trailering app depending on your hitch and trailer type.

  • Note: On SUVs, you will not have to select a hitch type.

4. Select “Done” to complete basic profile setup.

5. Once you’ve made a profile, the trailering system will remember information like the trailer type and mileage.

6. You can store up to five profiles in your vehicle.

7. Now that you have a trailer profile, you can select “Trailer Feature Setup” to use additional features like:

  • Tow/Haul reminder
  • Accessory trailer cameras (if equipped)
  • Create maintenance reminders

Create Predeparture Checklists

The In-Vehicle Trailering App has step-by-step checklists for connecting a trailer to your vehicle. You can even expand the steps to show clear examples of what connections need to be made. The premade checklists will vary depending on your hitch type.

  • To view a predeparture checklist, select the “Checklist” tab while in the trailering system.
  • Press the “+ Checklist item” to add custom items. You might do this if you want a reminder to check for your boat’s life preservers before heading to the dock, for example.
  • Press the “i” icon next to an item for a detailed description of the steps. Some steps will have diagrams designed to help explain the trailer connection.

Help Launch Your Boat

On some newer vehicles, your In-Vehicle Trailering System can help you learn how to launch your boat and pull it out of the water properly.

  • Before you can use this feature, you need to create a trailer profile for your boat or use the Guest profile. Follow the normal process for making a new trailer profile, but select "Boat" when asked to select the trailer type.
  • Once you've made a boat profile, you'll see a Boat tab on the main Trailering app screen.
  • When you tap on this tab, you'll see a status page for your boat. It will show caution triangles next to the setup you need to do to safely launch your boat or pull it out of the water.
  • The caution triangles will turn into green check marks as you complete these actions

Before you drive onto the boat ramp:

  • Unplug the trailer electrical connector
  • Shift to 4WD (if equipped)

When on the boat ramp:

  • Put the vehicle in PARK
  • Engage the parking brake

Boating Checklists and Tutorials

  • From the Boat tab of the trailering app, you'll see a Checklists tile. Tap on it and it will show you checklists you can walk through before hitching and launching your boat. You can delete, rearrange or add new checklist items if you want
  • The Boat tab also has a list of tutorials on launching a boat and pulling it out of the water
  • If you're towing a boat for the first time, it is recommended you look through these checklists and tutorials before attempting to back your boat into the water

Test Your Trailer’s Lights

This feature will run your trailer lights through a lighting sequence so you can get out of the vehicle and check to make sure they’re working properly.

Depending on your vehicle, to run a trailer light test, you’ll have to either:

  • Open the In-Vehicle Trailering App and select “Lights” from the Status menu, then “Start Light Test”
  • On older vehicles: Open the In-Vehicle Trailering App and select the Trailer Lights icon

If the system detects an issue with your trailer lights, it will alert you and offer to diagnose the problem.

Set Up Trailer Theft Alert

You can set up a Trailer Theft alert that will sound the vehicle’s alarm if the trailer’s wiring harness is disconnected while your vehicle is parked.

The vehicle alarm must be armed, the trailer’s wiring harness needs to be connected and the feature enabled in the trailering system for this to work.

  • To set up the Trailer Theft alert, turn it on in your trailer profile in the app
  • If you have an active subscription to the OnStar® Safety & Security Plan and Theft Alarm Notification is enabled, you can also be alerted by phone call, email or text when a theft is detected (based on the method designated in your OnStar Theft Alarm preferences)

Trailer Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring System (available feature; does not monitor spare tire)

To use this feature, you must install wireless GM-specific sensors within each trailer tire at a third-party trailer or tire service center.

After installation, you must follow prompts within the in-vehicle system to complete a learning process that lets your vehicle sync with the tire sensors.

  • Once setup is complete, tire pressure and temperature information are relayed to the trailer profile Home screen, allowing you to monitor tire pressure and temperature while driving.
  • A green status indicates the tire pressure/temperature is within the recommended range.
  • An amber status indicates the tire pressure/temperature needs attention.

Set Up Maintenance Reminders

The In-Vehicle Trailering App can also help you keep track of your trailer’s maintenance needs. The system will alert you when you hit a certain mileage number or after a designated length of time.

  • The system comes with stock maintenance reminders based on tire condition, wheel bearing or brake checks
  • You can also create a custom reminder
  • Remember that these reminders are not actively diagnosing vehicle problems and are instead meant to serve as reminders after you drive a certain number of miles or after a certain length of time

Trailer Tire Health

The Trailer Tire Health feature helps you track wear and tear on your trailer tires. It does not actively monitor your trailer tires, but it keeps track of the age of your tires based on the information you put into the Trailer Tire Pressure card. It will alert you when it detects your tires have reached six years of age.

Trailer Tire Health can also monitor the speed of your trailer tires. It will alert you if you exceed the speed rating of the tires for more than one minute.

For this feature to work, you’ll need to provide the tires’ speed rating when setting up the trailer tire section of the In-Vehicle Trailering App.

Important Trailering Information

On some vehicles, you can find vehicle-specific weight information, including curb weight, GVWR, GCWR, maximum payload, maximum tongue weight and rear GAWR on the Trailering Information Label on your driver-side doorjamb.

Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information. Some camera views require available accessory camera and installation. Not compatible with all trailers. See your dealer for details.

Q&As

Why should I make an in-vehicle Trailer Profile?

Creating a Trailer Profile, as opposed to using the Guest Trailer profile, allows you to track and store important information about your trailer, including mileage, maintenance reminders, the last used brake gain associated with the custom trailer profile, custom checklists and more. Up to five profiles can be stored in the vehicle. When using the Guest Trailer Profile, any trailer information entered will not be saved after the vehicle is shut off.

How do I access my Trailer Profile in another vehicle?

You can access your Trailer Profile in another similarly equipped vehicle by logging in to your Personal Profile through the center display and importing the profile.

Why can’t I see my trailer’s tire pressure and temperature information?

This feature requires installation of available wireless GM-specific sensors within the tires by a third-party trailer or tire service center. After the sensors are installed, a learning process must be completed within the trailer profile in the in-vehicle system by following on-screen prompts. Refer to your Owner’s Manual for detailed instructions.

Why didn’t my trailer light sequence start?/Why did my trailer light sequence stop Prematurely when initiated from the vehicle?

There are several factors that may prevent your trailer light sequence from starting or that would stop it prematurely. These include:

  • The vehicle is not in PARK.
  • The brake is applied.
  • The vehicle is turned OFF.
  • The hazard lights are turned ON.
  • The turn signal is activated.

Why aren’t all of the available features in my Trailer Profile?

The options presented to you are dependent on your trailer type and vehicle equipment (e.g., camera package).

Why isn’t Transparent Trailer View working?

To use Transparent Trailer, you must have a conventional hitch box-type trailer no more than 32 feet in length or a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer of any length. This feature requires the installation of an available Auxiliary Accessory Trailer Camera on the exterior of your trailer and completion of a setup process through the In-Vehicle Trailering System, which involves measuring and entering several trailer dimensions.

Refer to the installation instructions provided with the camera or to your Owner’s Manual for detailed instructions.

Do I need an active OnStar® and Connected Services plan to use certain trailering features?

No, however, to sync trailer profiles and import them, you need an OnStar plan.

Additionally, the OnStar Safety & Security Plan is required to receive a mobile Trailer Theft Alert notification (working electrical system, cell reception, GPS signal and armed GM factory-installed theft deterrent system also required).
